The ESP8266 is the predecessor of the new ESP32, a product specific for the Internet of Things market. Great quality/performance/price ratio, it makes sense to directly use this CPU only when the production volumes are very high. Otherwise, the ESP-WROOM-02 module, which contains the same CPU, is recommended. There is a custom firmware for ESP8266 with platform integration.
